HUMMINGBIRD OBSERVATORY

_1020359-min.JPG

Our observatory is located just 50 meters from our parking lot next to the main Tena-Quito road. To get to the place, follow the gravel path next to the parking lot. The place has a covered platform with and a small garden to enjoy, observe and photograph the beauty of the hummingbird species of the eastern slope of Ecuador.

Since 2022 we have established hummingbird feeders and created a small garden to attract hummingbirds, and over time we have created a covered platform to observe hummingbirds more comfortably.

Here is the progress of our observatory from 2022 to 2024.

Our garden and feeders are visited by 17 species in total from 2022 to date. The most common species seen daily in our waterers and garden are: Speckled Hummingbird, Bronzy Inca, Collared Inca, Long-tailed Sylph, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Chesnut-breasted Coronet, Gorgeted Woodstar and Greenish Puffleg.

The Greenish Puffleg is the rarest species that visits our feeders and garden. It's a pretty dull green hummingbird with white fluffy socks. A diffuse scaly appearance on the underparts, dark tail and coppery sheen on the head. Generally uncommon in Andean cloud forest from 1,500–2,500 m; can be found inside the forest or on the edge (eBird).
